2nd Grade
Welcome to our class website! I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and growing together.
Upcoming Dates
Here is what we've been up to in class! Reading / Writing / Science We are finishing our poetry unit and we are in the final stages of editing, publishing and illustrating our poems. The kids will get to share their poetry and their nonfiction research books at our final publishing party the last week of school! For the last few weeks of school, the kids will be researchers once more. Their final research project is researching one habitat with a team of researchers. Each team will consist of a climatologist, zoologist and a botanist. Each researcher will take notes on their specialty within their habitat, then will collaborate with the other researchers in their group. Their final “mission” is to create a new species of animal that could be discovered in their habitat and present their research findings to the class. It will be a fun way to wrap up our school year! Math In our final unit the students have reviewed money and solving story problems. We will finish this by solving more story problems involving money and will have our final unit assessment at the end of next week. If we have time, we will even create our own shopping story problems involving $$!

Monet paintings from Art class:Visiting the Lightning BugspARTners art project on slow Earth change:Upcoming Dates
Here is what we've been up to in class: Reading / Writing Most students have finished their fast/slow change research project! We’ve worked on creating complete paragraphs using dash facts. Then edited, revised and published each paragraph. Students then created a digital nonfiction book of their research project. We worked on adding important text features to each nonfiction book. The kids were very tech savvy when using the iPads to publish. I was very impressed! We will have a publishing party towards the end of the year where the kids will get to show off their nonfiction digital books and other published writing pieces we have completed throughout the end of the year. I will send more information regarding our publishing party in the coming weeks. This week we launched our Poetry Unit! We began by reading lots of poems and noticing different elements of poetry. Friday we practiced reading poems and focused on our fluency, specifically accuracy, scooping words into longer phrases and using expression. Over the next few weeks we will be reading many more poems and also writing our own poems. Science Next week we will begin a new science unit learning about plants and seeds. Specially, how seeds are dispersed and what they need to survive. Math We wrapped up learning about area and fractions this week and finished Unit 6 with an assessment. These will be graded and sent home next week. Unit 7 begins with learning about the metric system, so we will review what we’ve learned about measuring and focus on estimating and measuring items to the nearest centimeter or meter. Look for the Unit 7 overview in your child’s take home folder next week. |
