Behavior Expectations
I expect all students to grow to their fullest potential this year in 2nd grade! In order for all students to succeed, I have many incentives to keep all students engaged and trying their best. I have many positive behavior incentives occurring daily in our classroom to keep all kids focused and learning. For example, we have school wide "Gotchas" which they can cash in at the school store or in my classroom treasure box. In addition, I have a classroom "Rainbow Chart" which leads to great "Mystery Motivators" and a Star Sentence which also has larger positive rewards for the entire class. Throughout the year, we will have four different Colter Pride Events. These events are different every time, but can include: Hole Bowl, Axis Gymnastics, Movie and Muffins and Carnival Games. Sometimes they are all school wide, and other events are just for 2nd grade. These events are a privilege given to students with good behavior and are really fun! If a child receives an office referral and meets with Mr. Miller, they are unable to attend that quarter's Colter Pride Event.
Unfortunately, positive rewards don't work for every situation, so if behavior seems to inhibit learning from happening, I have a system for dealing with this and communicating home. Here is how it works for minor disruptions in class:
1) A personal, subtle, warning will be given.
2) If the behavior still persists, I will ask the child to refocus at the "Concentration Station". The station is a place for any student throughout the day to sit at if they need a break. I will ask them to join the rest of the class whenever they have had a chance to refocus and are ready engage in the activity.
3) If the behavior still persists, the child will stay in for part of recess and will fill out a "Refocus Form". This form is designated to give the child and teacher an opportunity to solve the problem and come up with solutions. The Refocus Form will also be sent home to be signed. This is so parents are aware of what happened in school, and can also help their child problem solve. A copy of the form is below.
4) If the problem is still occurring, I will most likely ask to meet with the parents in order for us to to discuss ways to help the child succeed at school.
5) If a child receives 3 or more refocus forms in a quarter, it is considered an "office referral" and the student will meet with Mr. Miller. When this happens the child loses the privilege of attending that quarter's Colter Pride Event. Also, if a child has a major incident occur (example: fighting, bullying etc.) they will not receive refocus forms, but will simply get an office referral and will meet with Mr. Miller.
I will go over this thoroughly with the class within the first few days of school. Please contact me if you have any questions.
